Fasting is NOT Dieting
Wow – I got a lot of emails last week about my September Sprint. I LOVE the enthusiasm, and I’m looking forward to having a crowd join me. Ok, confession – I kind of feel like Rocky with a crowd along for my run.
But in addition to the enthusiastic emails, I received a lot of questions… you’re doing WHAT?
The most common question I was asked was about fasting…
Won’t you ruin your metabolism?
How could you possible exercise after not having nutrients for 36 hrs?
Isn’t this starvation!
Forgive me. You’ve gotta understand that I spend so much time reading about, listen to, and otherwise devouring information about bodies, hormones, and metabolism, that I usually think everyone already knows all of this stuff.
I imagine that your Instagram feed, like mine, is filled with infographics on ketogenic diets and that your Facebook favorites link includes Dr Jason Fung’s Intensive Dietary Management fasting support page – but, oh my gosh… they have the most inspiring stories of transformation!
And then my inbox fills up with all of these questions, and I’m shaken from my bubble as I remember that you come to my office so that you don’t have to dig through article after article in an endless hunt to understand this stuff.
This hunt is my passion (and job), so I’ll spare you the hunt by giving you the highlights.
FASTING is the OPPOSITE of LOW CALORIES DIETS!
Fasting is a great strategy if you want to do any or all of the following:
- Lose weight and/or improve body composition
- Have laser sharp mental focus/energy for hours
- Leave hanger (you know… when you’re so hungry you’re angry) in the past
- Reduce your risk diabetes, CVD and cancer
- Feel all-around amazing.
On top of that, it can so be easy, IF you lay the right foundation.
Fasting in best coupled with a low carb/healthy fat diet because this approach to health is about hormones, not calories.
When a person is on a low carb/healthy fat diet, their insulin drops. This is the key to almost everything we are trying to achieve through dietary changes and fasting strategies. That’s because insulin tells your body to STORE energy. When insulin is low, your body can BURN [previously stored] energy.
That, my friend, is the ticket to healthy weight loss and risk reduction. Even if you don’t have weight to lose, this is the key to have amazing mental energy and that all around amazing feeling.
If you want to know how to pull this off without stumbling through all the guesswork, we cover it in Eat to Win. I also walk you through a step by step process of setting yourself up for success BEFORE you try fasting because frankly, I do not believe that any health strategy should include suffering.
Just like you can’t hate yourself into happiness, you can’t suffer your way to success. Let me make it easy for you.
