If your actions are not aligned with your desires, don’t be shocked when you don’t get what you want.

IF YOU WANT A DOG, DON’T GET A CAT AND ASK IT TO BARK.

This concept was one of my biggest takeaways from reading The Mastery of Love by Don Miguel Ruiz. The point – take the time to understand what you want in a relationship… but also in career, in health & wellness, in any area of life that’s important to you… and then align your actions with your desires.

For the answer, I turn to my body. My body doesn’t lie, even on the rare occasions when I wish it would. When any aspect of my life is out of alignment, my body feels drained. I want to sleep more. My digestion changes. I may crave more sweets. My weight fluctuates and my body feels puffy or swollen. And of course, with all of this going on, my connection with desire declines.

According to Candace Pert, PhD – the NIH researcher who discovered endorphins a few decades ago – the body IS the subconscious mind. Accepting this assertion, it seems that when my actions are out of alignment with my authentic truth, my body tries desperately to get the attention of my conscious mind, or it gives up and goes numb.

I know that I am far from alone in this experience. After talking to many patients about their experiences, I suspect everyone’s body speaks to them in this way even if the signals are different from person to person.

When it comes down to it, your body’s a map pointing you in the direction of your truth, your highest good, your purpose, your most desired state. Ignore the road signs, and you’ll end up sick, tired, riddled with headaches or digestive concerns, or in pain… and unfulfilled. Follow your spirit, and you will cultivate health and happiness along the journey.

If you’re not used to listening to the messages your body is sending, it’s okay. You can learn! It starts with paying attention. When most people try endlessly to distract themselves from body communication, the one dedicated to the path will listen most closely and with fierce curiosity.

PAUSE. TUNE IN. WHAT IS YOUR BODY TELLING YOU? IN WHAT DIRECTION IS IT ASKING YOU TO TURN? WHAT TRUE IS IT ASKING YOU TO EXPRESS?
